The Covenant Sealed in David’s Line

Isaiah 55:3b–5 (WEB)

3b. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
4. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander to the peoples.
5. Behold, you shall call a nation that you don’t know. A nation that didn’t know you shall run to you, because of Yahweh your God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he has glorified you.

God’s covenant promises reach their fulfillment in a coming figure who bears David’s mercies forward and draws nations that never before knew him. This is the burden this passage carries, and it builds directly on the free invitation already extended in the opening verses. Having called everyone who thirsts to come without price, the text now explains what that invitation ultimately secures: an everlasting covenant, sealed in the sure mercies once promised to David, now given a face and a mission for peoples who stand outside Israel altogether.
